Fishing licences
In WA, licences are required for:
use of a powered boat to sh or to
transport your catch or shing gear to
or from a land-based shing location
(Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence –
RFBL)
rock lobster
abalone
marron
South-west (south of 29°S) freshwater
angling
net shing (set, haul and throw nets).

Note: Fishing licences issued in other
states are not valid in WA.
Your fees help fishing
All revenue from recreational shing licences
is placed in a recreational shing fund and
reinvested in projects that directly benet
recreational shing in Western Australia.
Concessions
You only pay half the fee if:
a. you are under the age of 16 years*.
b. you hold a Seniors Card issued by the
Department of Communities WA Seniors
Card Centre.
c. you receive:
i. an age, disability support or widows
pension or allowance under the Social
Security Act 1991 of the Commonwealth.
ii. a pension under the Coal Industry
Superannuation Act 1989.
iii. a pension as a widow of a member of
the forces, a service pension or the
special rate of pension as a person who
is totally and permanently incapacitated,
under the Veterans Entitlements Act
1986 of the Commonwealth.
d. you are:
i. the spouse, de facto partner, widow
or widower of a person referred to
in paragraph (c), or if you were the
de facto partner of a person referred to
in paragraph (c) immediately before their
death.
Applying for and renewing licences
You can apply for or renew your shing
licence:
online at sh.wa.gov.au – click on the ‘Fishing
licence’ button, follow the instructions and
you will be redirected to DoTDirect.
in person at any of our ofces listed in this
guide.
by mail.
You will receive your licence card in the mail.
You may sh while waiting for your card to
arrive provided you can produce the receipt.
If you have been convicted of a sheries
offence, or had a recreational shing licence
cancelled or not renewed, or are not in
possession of the receipt when shing, you
cannot use your receipt to sh.
Existing licence holders will be sent an
application for renewal before their current
licence expires.
Licences cover a 12-month period from the
date of issue. If you lose your licence and
need a replacement, phone or attend your
nearest DPIRD licensing ofce – details are
on the back of this form. A fee may apply.

Recreational fishing by
Aboriginal people
If you are Aboriginal, you do not need a
recreational shing licence. This applies when
you take sh from any waters in accordance
with continuing Aboriginal tradition and the
sh are taken only for you or your family to eat
and not for a commercial purpose.
To identify gear, such as nets or rock lobster
pots, use the letter ‘A followed by the day,
month and year of your birth (e.g. if born on
21 May 1961, your gear identication number
is A21/5/61). You may choose to take out a
shing licence, in which case normal fees will
apply.
Fishing rules and information
You must produce your licence when
requested to by a Fisheries Ofcer. Breaking
the shing rules may result in you being
issued an infringement notice or being
prosecuted in court. Fines may be as high as
$400,000 and up to 10 times the dollar value
of the species.
