pushandpulldieseltrainsandotherlocomotivesusedtoprovideHeadEnd
Powerforthetrains.ThebodiesoftheDE30ACandtheDM30ACaresimilar;the
differenceistheabilityoftheDM30ACtouseelectricthirdrailwhilethediesel
engineisoff,enablingthelocomotivetousetheEastRiverTunnelsintoNew
YorkPennStation.DM30ACshavethirdrailcontactshoes,permittingdirect
servicefromnonelectrifiedlinesineasternLongIslandviathewesternelectrified
mainlinesallthewaytoPennStation.AfewsuchtrainsadayrunonthePort
Jefferson,OysterBay,andMontaukBranches.
Singleenginesrunwith6carsorlessandenginesaregenerallyplacedonthe
