Overview
The ESL Degree Preparation major offers a full course load of ESL credit bearing courses
at the intermediate and advanced levels in preparation for full admission to UNLV.
Admission Requirements
If you do meet the 3.0 minimum high school GPA for freshman and 2.5 minimum GPA
in 24 transferable credits for transfer students (graduate and undergraduate) but you
do not have the required TOEFL, IELTS or MTELP score, you can receive admission to
the ESL Degree Preparation major and enjoy the full benets of the University.
Certicates in English Language
• Advance English Prociency Certicate (AEP)
• Academic English Prociency Certicate (AEC)
The AEC consist of 15 credits in advanced ESL, with 12 of the credits in required
courses and 3 credits in elective courses. This program may be completed in one
semester. Completion of this certicate with a GPA 3.0 results in a waiver of the
TOEFL, IELTS, or MTELP tests.
General Education Classes Designed for International Students
The English Composition General Education classes are specically designed to
support ESL students. ENG 113E/F, ENG 113 and ENG 114 satisfy the general
education requirement in English and are equivalent to ENG 101, 101E/F, 102.

Testing Center and Test Preparation Workshops
• Michigan Test of English Language Prociency (MTELP) level 3
• ACCUPLACER
The Accuplacer placement exam is used to determine the English
prociency level of students who wish to enroll in ESL courses.
• MTELP Preparation Workshop
The MTELP Preparation Workshop is designed to help students
who have failed twice to prepare for the MTELP exam

Your ESL Pathway to Hospitality
Mission
The ESL Degree Preparation Academic Pathway to UNLV provides expert
scaffolded ESL instruction in reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary,
and standardized test preparation; academic support for international writers;
and short-term customer-tailored programs, in order to develop students’
inquiry, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Classes
The ESL Pathway program follows the UNLV semester schedule in the fall,
spring, summer II, and summer III with classes on the Maryland Parkway
campus. Since the ESL Pathway is an intensive English language program, each
class meets for 4.5 hours per week for a total of 18 hours for full-time study.
