Resumes
Visual, Written, and Performing Arts Resumes
There is certainly no one right resume for a student in the written, visual, and performing arts. A
Dance major’s resume is going to look extremely different from that of a Design major. And if you
are a Theater major, your resume will be nothing like that of a Studio Art major!
Applicable Career Communities:
Resume Best Practices
The resume you use to pursue work in your area of
study should be highly specialized and carefully
tailored to that particular field. For example, if you are
a Dance major, you need a performance resume to
use when applying for summer dance programs, for
auditions, etc. As a Design major, you need a
dynamic, highly visually appealing resume that
showcases your design talents and creativity. A
Theatre major’s resume should list out the various
roles they have played in shows during their time at
Ohio State while a Studio Art major would want to be
certain to list their exhibitions, as well as any awards
or grants they have received.
So, is there any commonality to the many different
resumes used by those in the arts?
No One Size Fits all Resume for
the Arts
Typically all students in the arts should also have a
well-developed, professional Portfolio or website. For
more information on how to utilize a free OSU
resource to build out an Portfolio, see the
Creating an
Portfolio Using u.osu.edu tip sheet.
Due to the great diversity of resumes across the arts,
as you embark upon the development of a resume or
when you wish to gain feedback upon these field
specific resumes (and your Portfolio!), your
department faculty are your greatest resource.
Career Success encourages you to be proactive and
reach out to faculty - experienced professionals in
your field - to arrange a time when they can offer you
insights into how to best represent yourself and your
work through your resume. A good time to do this is
your sophomore year.
General Resumes
One other point of connection within these diverse
fields is that, as a student in the arts, you also at
some point either during or after college most likely
need a general resume. This is where Career
Success can come to the rescue!
We recommend getting started on general resume
writing with our

Student tip sheet. Obtain feedback on your resume

Just how different might these two variations on a
resume look for one individual?
The following two resume samples show a field
specific resume and a general resume of a student
working toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance.
The first is a performance resume, and the second
resume would be perfect to use to apply to an
administrative position with an arts non-profit.
