Welcometoanother greatsummer!
Dear Families,
Welcome to Montgomery College Youth Programs
Summer 2024! The big news for this summer is: The
Cooking Camps are Back! We missed having them last
year while the building was undergoing renovations.
We know you are excited too. For new families, please
note that these camps typically fill within 48 hours of
registration opening. We do not have waiting lists, so
register early if interested.
We continue to expand the number of camps that allows
your child to participate in topics that may help with the
question “What do I want to be when I grow up?” We
know that by the 8th grade, some students in MCPS
select a high school based on the career they are most
interested in. Before committing to this, we want to give
students the opportunity to explore different options in
a low-stakes environment. Children can participate in a
camp for one or two weeks and essentially ‘try out’ the
possible career, without committing to a whole summer.
These camps are taught by MC faculty and experts in the
respective field of study.
MC Youth Programs now has 15 camps approved for
SSL hours. We work with MCPS to develop camps that
are fun while serving the community. The new camps
this year are based on happenings in Montgomery
County. Psych: What it All Means has been revised to
include community awareness and advocacy.
Based on family feedback, we changed the age that
students can sign themselves in and out. Starting
Summer 2024, students entering grades 6 and older
can sign themselves in and out. We understand that
this will work for some families and not for others. As
parents/guardians, we are relying on you to determine if
your child is mature enough for this responsibility. The
permission form can be found in your child’s CampDoc
profile. See the CampDocs description in this brochure
for additional information.
Please do not hesitate to contact our Program
Coordinators: Sharon Wolfgang and Majo Murguia, or
myself with any questions or concerns. We appreciate
the time you take to reach out to us.
Thank you,
Mary Mukherjee

Students must attend all days of the camp and complete any
project outlined in the course. On the last day of camp, students
will receive a signed Student Service Learning (SSL) hour form.
When school resumes in August, students must submit this
form to the SSL coordinator at their school.
MC Youth Programs does not submit the forms to the
individual schools.
Supervision During Lunch
Students attending either full-day programs or both morning
and afternoon half-day programs will receive supervision during
lunch at no additional cost. Students are responsible for their
lunch and should bring non-perishable items daily. Refrigeration
is not available. The cafeteria and vending machines are
available, but the lines are often long. For most programs the
lunch session runs from 12–1 p.m. Students are escorted from
their morning classroom to lunch, supervised during lunch,
and then escorted to their afternoon class. Students attending
only one half-day program are not eligible for lunch supervision
services. NOTE: There is no lunch supervision for students
in only a half-day camp. The College cannot provide an
environment free of foods containing nuts.
Before Care and After Care for
Summer Youth Programs
Children are provided with a safe and relaxed environment
in which to enjoy a variety of activities. Staff continuously
strive to keep the program activities flexible and appealing.
Registration is required. SPACE IS LIMITED!

Controversial Discussions: The Psychology of
Conversation
The landscape of the United States seems more polarized than
ever across many differing hot button topics. In a world of two
second sound bite arguments, political pundits, and rhetorical
strategies to obtain points rather than the truth, some wonder
how it is possible to have conversations amidst a diversity
of opinions. How is it that we create a culture of appropriate
controversial discussions but also to evaluate claims critically?
How do we engage in conversation without the trappings of
name-calling or shouting? This class attempts to navigate this
tightrope and digs deeper into the human ego, its insecurities,
and why it is the case that progress cannot be made in the
key issues that concern us most. This class will cover an
introduction to the psychology of conversation, methods of
interviewing and questioning, common errors in logic and
reasoning, and research skills related to hot-button topics.
Learning methods and practices for creating and engaging in
constructive conversations is crucial for increasing community
health and cooperation. By the end of the course, you will have
produced a fact sheet which details an unbiased snapshot
of the issue and the different perspectives associated with
it. Additionally, you will create a brochure of the topic, which
acts as a guide to help facilitate constructive conversations.

not provide medical assistants or care attendants. Campers
must exhibit independence and ability for self care. Parents are
not permitted to attend camp with their child.
Health Service
Montgomery College instructors and staff cannot administer
any medication, prescription or non-prescription (over-the-
counter), to students. If a student needs to take medication

medication, prescription, or over-the-counter drug.
Prescription medications must be in the original containers

Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures
Unless alternate arrangements have been made in advance
with the Youth Programs Office, drop-off and pick-up your
student at the assigned classroom. Students should be
dropped off at their assigned classroom no earlier than 15
minutes before the start time. Students must be signed in and
out of class by an adult unless prior arrangements are made
in advance with the Youth Programs Office. Your request will
be reviewed and you will be advised how to proceed*.
* Parents/guardians can authorize students entering 6th grade or
older to sign themselves in and out. Parents/Guardians must do
this in campdocs.
Late Pick-Up Policy: Because of the large, public, open
environments of our program sites, and our concern for student
safety, we require that parents accompany students to the
classroom or designated area when dropping off the student.
Parents/guardians are asked to sign the student out in person
at the end of the camp day, and will be asked prior to the start
of camp to identify those persons who have approval to pick up
the student from the program. In order to avoid late charges,
please arrive to pick up your student at least 10 minutes prior
to the end of their day.
Parents should arrange to pick up their student promptly at the
end of their class. There is no supervision before 8:45 a.m. or
after a student’s day ends unless he/she is registered in the
Before and/or After Care program. It is our policy to keep a
record of late pick-ups for each student for the week. Each family
will be charged a late pick-up fee of $25 for every 15 minutes or
part thereof. Repeated late pick-ups may jeopardize the student’s
enrollment in the program. All parents or authorized persons will
sign a late pick-up slip at the time of pick-up. The college’s clock
will be used to determine the time. Payment is due within two
days of the late pick-up and can be paid at a customer service
or cashier office. The student will not be allowed to continue
in the program if proof of payment of the late charge(s) is not
presented by the second day of the late charge assessment.
In the event that the student does not return, the parent will be
billed for any late fees not paid. Please note that the late fee is
assessed for each student picked up late.
Supervised Lunch
Students should bring a lunch, drink or water bottle, and/
or snacks. For most programs the lunch session runs from
12–1 p.m. Students attending either full-day programs or
both morning and afternoon half-day programs will receive
supervision during lunch at no additional cost. Students are
escorted from their morning classroom to lunch, supervised
during lunch, and then escorted to their afternoon class.
Students attending only half-day programs are not eligible for
lunch supervision. NOTE: There is no lunch supervision for
students in only a one half-day camp. The College cafeteria is

typically available and vending machines are located in various
campus buildings. The College cannot provide an environment
free of foods containing nuts.
Behavior
All students, regardless of disability/challenge (e.g. physical,
learning, psychological, emotional, behavioral, etc.) or
medical condition, must abide by the rules and regulations
of the Montgomery College Code of Conduct (see terms
and conditions), including exhibiting classroom behavior
that allows for a student environment free from harassment,
discrimination, and disruption. We understand that some
students require additional assistance to meet that standard,
and we will determine if reasonable accommodations can
be provided that will allow for the successful delivery of
