$1.5 Million Powerball® Ticket
Set to Expire
If No One Comes Forward, Schools Still Win
SACRAMENTODays have turned into weeks, weeks have turned into months, and
the California Lottery is still waiting for the player who bought a winning Powerball ticket
in Los Gatos this past October to come forward. The $1,556,855 prize will expire next
week, on Monday, April 24, 2023, if it is not claimed.
The winning ticket was one of two that matched five numbers, missing only the
Powerball number, in the draw on Wednesday, October 26, 2022. The winning ticket
sold in Southern California has already been claimed, but the other one sold in Santa
Clara County is still a mystery. That ticket was purchased at the Mobil gas station
(formerly 76) at 15380 Los Gatos Boulevard in Los Gatos.
At this point, there is no way of knowing if it was a local resident who bought the lucky
Powerball ticket, or if it was someone just passing through. Anyone who has bought
lottery tickets from that store would be wise to search their car, junk drawer, wallet, or
any other place they stash their tickets and see if they have one that matches the
numbers drawn on that date. The winning ticket matched 19-36-37-46-56, missing only
the red Powerball number 24.
Powerball winners in California who match five numbers have 180 days from the date of
the draw to claim their prize. If nobody submits a claim in time, the $1.5 million prize
money will instead go to public schools in California in line with the Lottery’s
mission. The Lottery exists solely to generate extra money for public education and has
raised more than $1 billion just in unclaimed prizes since Lottery tickets first went on
sale in 1985.
If a person believes they have the winning ticket, first and foremost, they should sign the
back of that ticket! Then, get it to one of the Lottery’s nine offices throughout the state
and complete the official claim form. Bay Area locations include Milpitas and Richmond.
Our team will help the claimant through the process. The winner also has the option of
sending in the claim form and winning ticket by mail.
The outstanding $1.5 million ticket needs to be postmarked or claimed in person by
Monday, April 24, 2023. All claim information, including directions for mailing in a
claim, is summarized on the California Lottery website.
###
The California Lottery’s mission is to provide supplemental funding to California public schools,
including kindergarten and grades 1-12, community colleges, the California State University, the
University of California, and other California public educational entities. The funds the Lottery
transferred to public education totaled approximately $2 billion for fiscal year 2021-22, which
amounted to a modest percentage of education’s overall budget. However, this funding is
largely discretionary, meaning schools can use this for important, yet unfunded instructional
programs they would otherwise not afford. During the same period, the Lottery generated more
than $8.8 billion in sales, more than 95% of which went back to the community in the form of
prize payments, retailer commissions and bonuses, and contributions to education. If you feel
